3SSE (3D Spatial Sound Experience) created by Marcus Quarta, George Tang, Teng Chue Swee and Jaewook Shin was an academic project that featured in the Lab 3d exhibition that took place a few months back in Manchester England. The exhibition was reviewed at the time but I feel the project deserves to be reviewed in its own right.

3SSE uses the latest in Macromedias Director to create an interactive and navigable environment. 3D and controlled sound (simulated stereo; panning etc.) combine to create a sparse landscape, almost Tron like in its simplicity, which is populated by bizzare pulsating creatures. "A sound is attached to each of the creatures, which is then looped and played in time with the other sounds. By moving through the soundspace the user mixes the sounds together."

It should be noted that this is a demo and while it is an adventurous project that does interesting things with 3D in Director (one of the few I've seen to date) it lacks the immersiveness it strives and needs to achieve. Hopefully this is a student project that will develop further.

Here is a site that was sent to us a while back, and I still have not been able to figure out: Kinema Ikon by Kaliman, was actually part of the Venice Biennale this past summer. I went back to the site several times and could not fully understand its purpose (aim, angle, etc.); however, I do think its interface is quite interesting which deems it, in my view, for at least a posting on the daily log. Enjoy.

Bored? What to do when reaching this state of mind is questioned by Brooke Knight , who is currently featured at boringart.com. Official announcement:
-----------------------------
"We are bored when we don't know what we are waiting for. That we do know, or think we know, is nearly always the _expression of our superficiality or inattention. Boredom is the threshold to great deeds. -Now it would be important to know: What is the dialectical antithesis to boredom?" [D2,7]

Brooke Knight addresses to this very concept of boredom in 'An investigation of things you could be doing rather than watching this piece' - 'An Hour of Your Time' with a vertigo of overlapping ideas and suggestions.

There is nothing you can do but watch! You cannot stop the time! Isn't this the grandeur of any contemplation?

Indifference before the very objects (of art) sic. while you could be thinking of all the 'other things' 'to feat'. Would you have the luxury of 'taking time' instead of 'taking notes'? Will you resist for an hour?

"Boredom is always the external surface of unconscious events. For this reason, it has appeared to the great dandies as a mark of distinction. Ornament and boredom." [D2a,2]

Fugit hora!

Are you ready to become Boring?!

Body experience keeps being redefined by new technology. In the past I mentioned Collective Presence, an online project combining reality TV aesthetics with performance art, most closely related to Stelarc's pieces consisting of machines directly affecting the human body according to internet traffic. (See our backlogs of Sunday February 16, 2003 for the actual review.)

Issues of the body and technology are brought to our attention once again by WiFi-SM. Like the prementioned pieces, this one also questions the role of technology in human experience. More directly connected to Stelarc's work, the WiFi-SM project claims to sell a patch which lets the user "feel pain" according to searches made on the internet. One can customize the words that will cause the pain, in order to fulfill a personal guilt-trip; all for only $49.99.

The major difference between WiFi-SM and the previous projects is that both Stelarc and Collective Presence do perform the actions they profess, while WiFi-SM is only a webpage promoting a myth that is quickly dismantled. Some netizens might be disappointed by such reality; but in a way, the webpage functions as a well calculated commentary on how some people are always looking for ways to change or there I say improve themselves via technology: If it is not losing weight with pills, or burning fat with special cremes, it is a patch that in other circumstances could help stop the smoking habit, but in this case creates a myth of self-improvement for global culture by proposing pain as a meaningless liberal conduit of humanitarianism. There might be a good possibility that this "patch idea" will be actually put into practice not in relation to pain, but simply for downloading information straight to the brain; it already sounds better than having a permanent microchip installed in one's head.

Not a new piece of work but little known to my knowledge, "Wrong Browser" is yet another artists re/mis - interpretations of how web browsers should or could work. Yet don't let this dissuade you from having a look at these small downloadable applications. Applications as art or art as applications, they are some of the most successfull examples of this very particular genre of the cross over between net.art and application art - "browser art", (but is this genre "browser art" or is it when we manipulate / dismantle / subvert and totally control an existing browser e.g. the work of "jimpunk"??).

Available for mac (classic only I think) and pc, well worth downloading. Personal favourite ".org".
